Why Costa da Caparica is Europe's friendliest place to learn to surf
Just 20 minutes south of Lisbon, Costa da Caparica unfolds into more than eight kilometres of open, golden, sandy beach. It is one of the rare places in Europe where a complete beginner and a seasoned surfer can share the same coastline and both leave the water grinning. The waves here are consistent enough that you will almost always catch something, yet forgiving enough that a mistake ends in soft white water rather than on a reef. Because the seabed is pure sand, there is nothing hard to fall on — every wipeout is a soft landing. Add nearly 300 days of sunshine a year, quick public transport from the capital, and one of the most relaxed, welcoming surf communities on the continent, and you have arguably the best classroom in Europe to stand up on a board for the very first time.

Planning your first surf trip
A little planning goes a long way. Here is when to come, what the water is like, and what to throw in your bag before you head to the coast.
The best time of year to learn
You can surf Caparica all year round, but for a first-timer the sweet spot runs from late spring to early autumn — roughly May through September. In those months the Atlantic warms up, the wind is often lighter in the mornings, and the beginner-friendly waves are at their most playful. Summer brings the calmest, cleanest conditions and the longest days, which means more time in the water and more chances to practise. Spring and early autumn reward you with smaller crowds, empty line-ups and that golden light photographers love. Whenever you come, mornings are usually the best time for beginners: the ocean tends to be smoother before the afternoon sea breeze picks up.
Water, wetsuits and what to pack
The Atlantic here is refreshing even in August, so a wetsuit is part of the fun rather than a chore — and at Dr. Bernard it is always included. Beyond that, packing is simple: bring sunscreen (reef-safe if you can), a bottle of water, a towel and a change of clothes. Leave the ego at home and bring a willingness to fall a few times; every surfer you admire started exactly where you are about to.
Your first surf lesson, step by step
Wondering what actually happens in a beginner session? Here is your first morning, from the warm-up on the sand to the etiquette that keeps everyone in the water smiling.
What a lesson actually looks like
Our beginner surf lessons begin on the sand, not in the sea. Before you get wet, your coach walks you through ocean safety, how to read the beach, how to paddle efficiently, and the all-important pop-up — the move that takes you from lying down to standing. Then you head into shallow white water where you can always touch the bottom, and your instructor pushes you into your first waves. Most people ride white water and get to their feet within the first session. Groups are kept small so you get real, personal attention from a coach certified by the Portuguese Surf Federation who grew up surfing these exact waves.
- A soft-top beginner board, sized for you — included.
- A wetsuit in your size — included.
- A coach certified by the Portuguese Surf Federation, who speaks English and Portuguese.
- Small groups and a safe, shallow, sandy-bottom practice zone.
A typical morning in the water
Picture it: you arrive to the smell of salt and fresh coffee, meet your coach and small group on the sand, and warm up while the ocean glints in the morning light. Fifteen minutes of technique later you are wading into warm, waist-deep white water. Your coach lines you up, calls the wave, gives you a push — and suddenly you are gliding towards the beach on your feet, heart pounding, grinning like a kid. You will fall, laugh, paddle back and do it again, each ride a little longer than the last. Two hours fly by. By the end you are tired in the best possible way, already asking when you can come back — which is exactly how most surfing addictions begin.
Safety and etiquette: the unwritten rules
Surfing is as safe as it is fun when you respect a few basics. While you are learning, always surf near a coach or lifeguard, keep hold of your board, and look around before you paddle for a wave. In the line-up, the surfer closest to the breaking part of the wave has priority — never 'drop in' on someone already riding. Paddle around the breaking waves rather than straight through them, and never throw your board away where others might be. Our coaches teach all of this from your very first session, so you'll be a safe, respectful and genuinely welcome member of the line-up from day one. Want the full local rundown before you go? It's all in our Caparica surf guide.
Why learn with a school, not from a YouTube video
You can absolutely try to teach yourself the basics of surfing — but a good coach compresses months of trial and error into a single morning. An instructor reads the conditions for you, positions you in exactly the right spot, corrects your pop-up before bad habits set in, and keeps you safe while you focus on the fun part. You'll progress faster, skip the frustration that makes many self-taught beginners quit, and pick up the etiquette that earns you respect in the water. Add included equipment and zero logistics to organise, and a good lesson quickly pays for itself in pure stoke. Think of it as the difference between wandering a new city with a map you can't quite read, and being shown around by a local who knows every shortcut and every hidden gem.
The best surfer out there is the one having the most fun. On your first day, that is almost always the beginner.
Going further: camps, kids and groups
One taste of standing up and most people want more. Whatever your next step, there is a Dr. Bernard experience built for it.
Surf camps and real progression
If one lesson leaves you hooked — and it usually does — our surf camps are the fastest way to go from first waves to real, repeatable turns. Over several days you get daily coaching, video feedback, theory sessions and enough water time for the movements to become muscle memory. Camps mix surfers of different levels, so you learn as much from the community as from the coaching, and evenings are spent sharing stories over dinner by the beach. It is a holiday and a fast-track surf course rolled into one.
Surfing for kids and the whole family
Caparica is a brilliant place to get children into the ocean. Our kids and youth surf programmes pair qualified coaches with a playful, safety-first approach, so young groms build confidence in the white water while parents relax nearby — or jump in for a lesson of their own. Surfing teaches patience, respect for nature and a healthy dose of resilience, and there are few better childhood memories than riding a first wave to the beach. Families often combine a kids' session with a parent lesson and lunch at the restaurant, turning a morning at the beach into an easy, screen-free family day.
Groups, birthdays and team days
Surfing is even better shared. Stag and hen parties, birthdays, friend reunions and corporate and team-building days are one of our specialities: we handle the boards, wetsuits, coaching and the after-surf food and drinks, so all your group has to do is show up and have fun. A shared wipeout is the fastest way to break the ice, and a beachfront lunch afterwards keeps the good energy going. Tell us your group size and what you are celebrating, and we will tailor the whole day around you.
Make it a getaway, not just a lesson
Because surf, food, wellness and a bed are all in one beachfront spot, a single lesson easily grows into a whole trip.
Where to stay: wake up next to the waves
The easiest way to make the most of your trip is to sleep where you surf. Villa Caparica, our surf-and-social hostel, sits just steps from the sand. Roll out of bed, grab a board and be in the water before your coffee goes cold. It is designed for travellers who want to surf, meet people and relax without a long commute — the kind of place where a solo trip quickly turns into a group of friends.

More than surf: the Dr. Bernard way of life
Dr. Bernard is not just a surf school — it is a whole beachfront lifestyle. After your session, refuel at our beach restaurant, unwind with a wellness class or a massage, or answer a few emails from our seafront coworking space if you are mixing work and waves. It all sits in one place, so a surf lesson can easily become a full day — or a full week — by the ocean.

Local knowledge before you paddle out
Every beginner benefits from a little local intel: where the gentlest peaks are, when the tide is kindest, and how to respect the line-up. We put all of it into our Caparica surf guide — bookmark it and read it before your first paddle-out.
